Find the cause

Something's Wrong With Your Power. But What?

Electrical faults rarely announce themselves clearly. The safety switch trips every time it rains. Half the house goes dead while the other half works fine. Lights flicker in one room, then behave for a week. A power point smells faintly of burning plastic.

You can reset the RCD and hope, but if the fault keeps coming back there's a cause behind it: a damaged cable, moisture in a fitting, a failing appliance, or a connection working itself loose. Guessing which one wastes your time and money.

Fault finding is the fix for the guessing. Glen isolates circuits at the switchboard, tests each one, and narrows the fault down to the actual point of failure. You find out what's wrong, why it happened, and exactly what the repair costs: one fixed price, before anything gets touched.

Urgent right now?

Smell burning, see sparks, or hear buzzing from the switchboard? Treat it as urgent. Turn the circuit off at the main switch if it is safe. During business hours, go to our Emergency Electrician page or call Glen on 0438 678 218. If there is an immediate danger or fire, call 000.

What we do

Electrical Fault Finding Across Perth's Northern Suburbs

JEC diagnoses and repairs electrical faults in homes and small commercial premises across Joondalup, Wanneroo, Currambine, Clarkson and the wider northern Perth corridor. Every job starts with systematic testing at the switchboard, so the repair fixes the cause, not just the symptom.

Faults we find and fix:

  • Tripping safety switches (RCDs) and circuit breakers: isolating which circuit and which appliance or fitting is causing the trip
  • Partial power loss: half the house dead, one room dead, or power points working while lights don't
  • Flickering or dimming lights: loose connections, failing fittings, or supply-side problems
  • Burning smells and hot power points: locating the overheating connection before it becomes a fire risk
  • Rain-triggered faults: moisture getting into external fittings, garden lighting, or roof cavities
  • Dead power points and switches: testing, repairing or replacing failed outlets
  • Recurring blown fuses on older ceramic-fuse boards
  • Full circuit testing and fault reports: useful after storm damage, water leaks, or for insurance

Where the fault traces back to a bigger underlying problem (a degraded switchboard or ageing wiring), Glen will tell you straight, show you what he found, and quote the proper fix separately. No scare tactics, just what the testing shows.

The Faults We Get Called Out For Most

  1. Safety switch keeps tripping

Usually a faulty appliance or a circuit fault. We isolate which, instead of just resetting it and hoping.

  2. Half the house has no power

Often a tripped circuit or a loose connection. We trace it back to the source.

  3. Lights flickering or dimming

Can be a loose neutral or an overloaded circuit. Cheaper to sort early than late.

  4. A burning smell or a hot switch

Treat this as urgent. Turn it off at the board and call us; it's a real fire risk.

  5. The switchboard buzzes or crackles

A board that hums or crackles needs looking at before it fails.

  6. A power point that sparks

A sparking outlet is a fault, not a quirk. We replace it and make it safe.

Why JEC

Why Northern-Suburbs Homeowners Call JEC for Faults

Diagnosis, not part-swapping

Anyone can replace parts until the symptom stops. With 25+ years on the tools, Glen tests first and works from the evidence, so you pay to fix the actual fault once.

Fixed price before the repair

Once the fault is found, you get one price for the repair in writing. It doesn't move while the job's underway, and there are no "while we're in there" add-ons.

One local sparky, start to finish

You deal with Glen directly. The person who answers the phone is the person who finds your fault. JEC is family-owned and based in Joondalup, not a dispatch centre.

Local fault work

Fault Finding in Joondalup and the Northern Suburbs

Faults up this end of Perth tend to repeat themselves, because the housing stock and the blocks have a lot in common.

Closer to the coast, through Ocean Reef, Mullaloo and Hillarys, salt air gets into outdoor power points, garden lighting and pool equipment. Corroded terminals trip a safety switch on damp mornings and behave perfectly by lunchtime. On the sandy blocks further inland, buried reticulation and bore wiring is a common culprit: a cable nicked years ago by a shovel only becomes a fault once water finds it.

And a lot of Joondalup and Wanneroo homes still run their original 1970s to 1990s circuits. On those, the fault is often the switchboard itself rather than anything out in the house.

Where Glen starts

Recurring trips get traced to the actual point of failure, not just reset. If the board turns out to be the cause, you'll be told that plainly, and you can read what that job involves on the Joondalup switchboard upgrades page.

JEC is based in Joondalup, so Glen isn't driving up from south of the river to look at your board. Fault work is handled Monday to Friday, 7am–5pm.

How Fault Finding Works

  1. Tell Glen the symptoms

Call 0438 678 218 and describe what's happening: what trips, when it started, which rooms are affected. That detail often narrows the search before Glen arrives.

  2. Systematic testing

Glen isolates circuits at the switchboard and tests each one to trace the fault to its source: a fitting, a cable run, an appliance, or the board itself.

  3. Fixed-price repair

You get a plain-English explanation of what was found and one fixed price for the repair. Approve it, and most faults are fixed in the same visit.

Electrical Fault Questions, Answered

Why does my safety switch keep tripping?

A safety switch (RCD) trips when it detects electricity leaking from a circuit, usually a faulty appliance, moisture in a fitting, or damaged wiring. If it resets and holds, unplugging appliances one at a time can identify a faulty appliance. If it keeps tripping with everything unplugged, the fault is in the fixed wiring and needs a licensed electrician to test the circuits.

Why is half my house without power?

Partial power loss usually means one circuit has failed while the rest still work: a tripped breaker, a blown fuse on an older board, or a broken connection somewhere on that circuit. Check the switchboard first for a tripped switch. If resetting it doesn't hold, or nothing looks tripped, the circuit needs proper fault testing.

How much does electrical fault finding cost in Perth?

You'll be told the cost of the diagnosis visit on the phone before Glen books it in. Once the fault is found, the repair itself is quoted as one fixed price before any work starts, so there's no open-ended hourly billing.

Are flickering lights dangerous?

Sometimes. A single flickering bulb is usually just the bulb or fitting. Lights flickering across multiple rooms, dimming when appliances start, or paired with buzzing or burning smells can point to a loose connection, which generates heat and is a genuine fire risk. That combination is worth having tested promptly.

Can I find the fault myself?

You can safely do two things: check the switchboard for tripped switches, and unplug appliances to see if an RCD then holds. Beyond that, fault finding means testing live circuits, and in WA that work legally requires a licensed electrician. If a reset won't hold or the fault keeps returning, stop resetting and get it tested.
