A Suburb Built in About Twelve Years

Joondanna Heights was the first declared township in the Perth Road District, its boundaries set out in the Government Gazette of 17 November 1939. Then the war stopped everything and almost nothing went up. What filled the suburb came afterwards: the first post-war public housing scheme in the district was the block bounded by Charles, Green and London Streets, the late 1940s and early 1950s did the rest, and by 1958 there was very little vacant land left. The name itself was only amended to Joondanna in 1954, after a farm said to have been owned by an early settler.

That compressed history is the whole electrical story here. A great many original Joondanna houses were modest timber-framed cottages built for workers, wired when a stove, a fridge, a wireless and a handful of lights were the entire load. Seventy years on, the same houses run reverse-cycle air conditioning, induction cooking, a home office and, increasingly, a car in the driveway that would like to charge. None of that was in the original brief.

The other thing happening here is subdivision. Joondanna is 1.4 square kilometres sitting six kilometres from the city, and those 1940s and 1950s cottages are steadily coming down, or being kept at the front of the block while something new goes in behind. Every one of those creates electrical work that has nothing to do with a fault. Further south, North Perth has the same pressure on older stock, but it grew over a century rather than a decade, so its houses carry layers where Joondanna's carry one.
