Why Old Ceramic Fuse Boards Get Replaced

Ceramic fuses do one thing: melt a piece of wire when a circuit is overloaded. They're slow, they're fiddly to rewire in the dark, and they offer no RCD protection, the safety switches modern boards use to cut power the instant electricity leaks to earth.

If your board still has round screw-in fuses, it was built to a standard that's decades out of date. It usually shows up as blown fuses, no spare circuits, or an electrician mentioning it when quoting other work.

What the Replacement Involves

An old fuse box replacement is a one-day job for most homes:

  • Free switchboard safety check first: Glen tells you what the board needs and what it does not
  • Ceramic fuses replaced with circuit breakers, circuit by circuit
  • RCD safety switches fitted to protect power and lighting circuits
  • New enclosure where the old one can't safely be reused
  • The meter box area left tidy

The power is off for part of the day. Glen tells you roughly how long before the job starts.

Not sure what you have?

Ceramic fuses are round and screw in, usually with a visible wire inside. Modern breakers are rectangular switches you flick. If you're not sure, the free safety check settles it in minutes.

One Fixed Price, in Writing, Before We Start

No hourly rate and no revised bill at the end. After the free check, you get one fixed price in writing for exactly what your board needs. The work is covered by JEC's 10-year workmanship guarantee, and JEC holds WA licence EC9674 · EW144799. Rated 5.0 on Google.

Ceramic Fuse Board Questions

Can you replace ceramic fuses with circuit breakers?

Yes, that's the core of the job. Each fuse circuit is moved onto a modern breaker, and RCDs are added so the whole board meets current standards.

Do I have to replace a ceramic fuse board?

There's no blanket legal requirement. But if you're selling or leasing, WA's Electricity Regulations require a minimum of two RCDs, and most ceramic boards have none.

How long does a fuse box upgrade take?

Most switchboard upgrades are done in a day, including the time with the power off.

Are ceramic fuses still legal in WA?

Living with them, yes. But WA law requires at least two RCDs (safety switches) protecting all power and lighting circuits before a home is sold or newly leased, and a ceramic fuse board rarely meets that without an upgrade. The fuses themselves also react slower than modern breakers and offer no protection against electric shock.

How much does it cost to have a fuse board changed in Perth?

It depends on the board, the number of circuits and the condition of the wiring behind it, so we don't quote blind. Glen inspects the board first, then gives you one fixed price in writing before any work starts, so the number you agree to is the number you pay.
