The problem

Bore Not Running? It's Often the Electrics, Not the Pump

Garden bores are everywhere on the older, larger blocks through Wanneroo, Joondalup and Perth's northern corridor, and when one stops, most owners assume the pump itself has died. Often it hasn't. A bore that won't start is frequently an electrical fault: a failed starter or controller, a dead timer, corroded outdoor wiring, or a pump motor tripping the safety switch every time it kicks in.

That distinction matters for your wallet. Replacing a bore pump is a big spend; fixing the circuit, controller or timer that drives it is usually a much smaller one. Glen tests the electrical side first: supply, protection, starter, controller, timer, and the wiring run out to the bore. Then he tells you straight what's failed. If the problem turns out to be the pump or the bore itself rather than the electrics, he'll tell you that too, so you can get the right trade in instead of paying twice.

What we do

Bore Pump Electrical Work We Handle

JEC handles the electrical side of garden bores for homes across Perth's northern suburbs.

  • Bore pump wiring and connection: new or replacement pumps wired to a properly protected circuit, with weatherproof isolation at the bore so the pump can be serviced safely.

  • Controllers and starters: supply, install and replace pump controllers and starter boxes, including units that have failed with age or weather exposure.

  • Bore timers: replace failed timers and set the new one to your allocated watering days under the Water Corporation roster, including the winter sprinkler switch-off.

  • Fault finding and repair: pump won't start, runs then cuts out, trips the RCD or blows fuses. Glen tests the circuit end to end and quotes the fix at a fixed price.

  • Circuit and switchboard checks: bore pumps draw a solid load on start-up, and on older blocks the circuit often runs off the home's original board. If the board or circuit is the weak point, you'll get a clear, separately priced option to sort it.

Common callouts

Bore Pump Problems We Sort

  1. The pump won't start

Could be the switch, controller, wiring or the pump itself. We find which before quoting a fix.

  2. It trips the safety switch

Usually moisture or an insulation fault in the pump or cabling. We test and isolate it.

  3. It runs, then cuts out

Often a thermal overload or a controller fault. Worth diagnosing before the pump is damaged.

  4. The timer or controller plays up

Reticulation controllers and timers fail with age and weather. We repair or replace them.

  5. Sun-perished or corroded wiring

Outdoor bore wiring cops the weather. We replace it properly with weather-rated cable.

Why JEC

Why Bore Owners Call JEC

Honest diagnosis before any spend

Glen tests the electrical side first and tells you whether the fault is the electrics, the pump, or the bore, even when the answer means the job isn't his.

Fixed price, agreed before we start

No hourly-rate mystery. Once the fault is found, you get one fixed price for the repair, in writing, before the work happens.

Local to the bore suburbs

JEC is based in Joondalup, minutes from the older Wanneroo and northern-corridor blocks where garden bores are part of how the place runs. 25+ years of Perth experience, family-owned.

Controllers and starters

Bore Pump Controller Replacement

Garden bores are close to standard on the sandy blocks through Joondalup, Kinross, Currambine and Wanneroo, and the controller is usually the part that gives up first. The pump itself is often fine.

The tell-tales are fairly consistent. The pump won't start at all. It starts but won't shut off. It hums and trips the safety switch. Or the reticulation controller runs its program while nothing actually comes out of the sprinklers.

Most of those come back to a failed contactor, relay, pressure switch or the retic controller itself, and they get discovered at the same time of year: the winter sprinkler switch-off lifts, the system runs for the first time in months, and nothing happens.

Electrical, not plumbing

JEC handles the electrical side: the controller, the starter, the circuit and the wiring back to the board. If the fault turns out to be the pump or the bore itself, you'll be told straight away so you can get the right trade in rather than paying twice.

From Dead Bore to Running Again

  1. Test and diagnose

Glen tests power to the bore, the safety switch, the starter or controller, the timer and the wiring run, and pins down what's actually failed.

  2. Fixed-price quote on the spot

You get one price for the repair before any work starts. If the fault is mechanical rather than electrical, Glen tells you straight and you've lost nothing but the look.

  3. Repair, test, done

The faulty part is repaired or replaced, the system is tested through a full start-up, and your timer is set to your watering days before Glen leaves.

Bore Pump Electrical Questions, Answered

My bore pump won't start. Is it the pump or the electrics?

Either is possible, and testing is the only honest answer. Common electrical causes include a failed starter or controller, a dead timer, a tripped or faulty safety switch, and corroded outdoor connections. Glen tests the electrical side end to end; if everything checks out, the problem is likely the pump or bore itself, and he'll tell you that rather than guess.

Why does my bore pump keep tripping the safety switch (RCD)?

A pump that trips the RCD usually has moisture in a connection, degraded wiring insulation, or a motor fault developing. It's the safety switch doing its job, so don't keep resetting it and hoping. Glen tests the circuit and the pump's electrical side to find what's leaking current, then quotes the fix at a fixed price.

Can you replace just the bore timer or controller?

Yes. Timers and controllers fail long before pumps do, especially wall-mounted units exposed to weather. Glen supplies and fits a replacement, wires it in, and programs it to your allocated watering days under the Water Corporation roster, including switching off for the winter sprinkler ban.

How much does bore pump electrical repair cost in Perth?

It depends on what's failed; a timer replacement is a different job to rewiring a corroded pump circuit. Whatever the fault, the process is the same: Glen diagnoses it, gives you one fixed price in writing, and that's what you pay.

Do you install new bore pumps?

Glen handles the electrical side: the protected circuit, weatherproof isolator, starter or controller, timer, and final connection of the pump. The bore drilling and pump supply side is a bore specialist's job. If your pump itself needs replacing, Glen can wire in the new unit once it's supplied.
