Does Your Older Home Actually Need Rewiring?
A lot of the housing stock across Joondalup, Wanneroo and Perth's older northern suburbs went up in the 1970s and 80s, and much of it still runs on its original wiring. Cable insulation from that era degrades in WA roof spaces, circuits were designed for a fraction of what a modern household plugs in, and the switchboard those circuits feed is often the original ceramic-fuse board too.

Here's the honest bit: some of these problems don't need a full house rewiring. A failing circuit can sometimes be replaced on its own, and what looks like a wiring problem is sometimes a switchboard problem. That's why the first step is an inspection and a straight answer, not a quote for the biggest job on the menu.

What a House Rewire Involves

Full house rewiring
Every circuit replaced: power, lighting, oven, hot water and aircon circuits run on new cable, with new power points and switches where yours are dated or damaged. This is the right call when the original insulation is breaking down across the house, not just on one circuit.
Partial rewiring
One or more failed circuits replaced while sound circuits stay in service. Common when a renovation touches part of the house, or when an inspection shows the damage is localised. If a partial rewire will genuinely fix your problem, that's what Glen will quote, not a full rewire you don't need.

How much does house rewiring cost in Perth?
It depends on the size of the home, how many circuits it has, and how accessible the roof and wall cavities are. What's fixed at JEC is the process: after an inspection you get one fixed price in writing, and that's the number you pay.
How do I know if my house needs a full rewire or just a repair?
An inspection settles it. Localised problems, like one dead circuit or one damaged run of cable, can often be fixed with a partial rewire. Widespread insulation breakdown, cloth or rubber cabling, or circuits that can't carry modern loads point to a full rewire. Glen inspects first and quotes only what the wiring actually needs.
Do homes from the 1970s and 80s need rewiring?
Not automatically. Plenty of northern-suburbs homes from that era are still safe, but cable insulation degrades with age and heat, and original circuits weren't designed for today's appliances. If your home has its original wiring and you're seeing tripping, flickering or warm power points, it's worth an inspection either way.
Does a rewire include the switchboard?
Often it should. Original wiring usually feeds an original board, and if that board still runs ceramic fuses it won't have the safety switches (RCDs) that WA law requires before a home is sold or leased: a minimum of two. Glen quotes the switchboard upgrade as a clearly separated line in the same fixed price, so you choose with full information.
Can we live in the house during a rewire?
Glen will walk you through how the job is staged and how long power will be off before you commit to anything.
Will I get a certificate when the rewire is done?
Yes. All rewiring work is tested and certified by a licensed WA electrical contractor (EC9674), and you receive compliance paperwork for your records, handy for insurance, sale or lease.
