A Whole Suburb, One Vintage · EC9674
Electrician in Duncraig, Boards of a Certain Age
Duncraig went up almost all at once in the mid-1970s, so its switchboards are reaching fifty together. JEC tests what is actually there, then quotes one fixed price for the agreed work.
Built in One Push, Ageing on the Same Clock
Duncraig barely existed before the 1960s. The name was approved in 1969 and the bulk of the suburb went up in the mid-1970s, fast enough that the infrastructure arrived alongside the houses: Davallia Primary and the Duncraig library both opened in 1974, Duncraig Primary in 1975, and the senior high school and the Glengarry hospital in 1979.
That is unusual, and it matters electrically. Most suburbs age unevenly. Duncraig does not. A street of houses wired in the same year reaches the same point at the same time, which is why the conversation here is so often about the original board still sitting in the meter box, with ceramic fuses or early circuit breakers and no safety switch behind them.
The second half of the story is what has happened since. Duncraig blocks are generous and owners tend to extend or rebuild rather than leave. Fifty years of extensions, retrofitted air conditioning, added power points and a growing list of appliances have been hung off boards designed for a 1970s household. Neighbouring Carine tells a similar story, though it was built in stages over a longer period.
Open the Meter Box Before You Buy the Charger
The most common Duncraig disappointment is ordering an EV charger, a second split system or a new oven, then finding the board has no spare ways and no RCD protection to connect it to. Have the board assessed first. If it needs work, that gets quoted alongside the install, so there is one decision and one fixed price instead of a surprise on the day.

Local questions
Duncraig Electrical Questions
Our Duncraig house is from the mid-1970s. Is the switchboard due for replacement?
Often, yes, but it is worth checking rather than assuming. A board of that vintage usually predates RCD safety switches entirely, and WA requires a minimum of two RCDs before a home is sold or leased. A free safety check takes about 20 minutes and tells you exactly where the board stands, including whether it has room for anything you plan to add.
We are extending rather than moving. When should the electrical be looked at?
Before the plans are final. A lot of Duncraig work is extensions and rebuilds on the original blocks, and an extension adds circuits the 1970s board was never sized for. Assessing the board and existing cabling first turns the electrical line in your budget into a fixed number, and it stops other trades waiting on a board upgrade halfway through.
The whole street seems to be the same age. Does every house need the same work?
The starting point is the same but the answer is not. Duncraig was built in a tight window, so the boards are of an age, but fifty years of owners have altered them very differently. Some have had RCDs retrofitted, some have added circuits properly, some have not. Testing is what separates them, and Glen quotes only what genuinely needs doing.
Does JEC come to Duncraig from Joondalup?
Yes, for quoted, scheduled work such as switchboard upgrades, rewiring, EV chargers and lighting, with travel priced into the fixed quote so there is nothing extra on the day. Urgent same-day callouts are focused closer to the Joondalup base. All work is during business hours, Monday to Friday, 7am to 5pm.
